The Tengiz oil field, located in Western Kazakhstan, was discovered in 1979. In April 1993, the Tengizchevroil (TCO) joint venture was formed, with the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Chevron Corporation as the initial founding partners. Today, TCO's partners are Chevron (50%), JSC NC KazMunayGas (20%), ExxonMobil Kazakhstan Ventures Inc. (25%), and LukArco (5%).
The 2,500 km2 (1,600 mi2) license area includes the Tengiz field and the smaller, but larger Korolevskoye field. Recoverable reserves of the fields are estimated at between 890 million and 1.37 billion tonnes of oil (7.1 to 10.9 billion barrels). Estimated reserves in the Tengiz field reservoir are 3.2 billion tonnes (25.5 billion barrels). The Korolevskoye field, a world-class field, holds an estimated 200 million tonnes (1.5 billion barrels).
Tengiz is the world's deepest giant oil field, with the top of its reservoir occurring at a depth of approximately 4,000 m (13,000 ft). The Tengiz reservoir is 20 km (12 mi) wide and 21 km (13 mi) long, with a mile-thick oil-bearing formation.
The Future Growth Project (FGP) and the Wellhead Pressure Management Project (WPMP) are two integrated projects being implemented simultaneously by Tengizchevroil. The FGP implementation will increase oil production at the Tengiz field by approximately 12 million tons per year, or 260,000 barrels per day, to approximately 39 million tons per year, or 850,000 barrels per day. The FGP is aimed at expanding production capacity, and the WPMP will ensure full utilization of the processing facilities at Tengiz's existing refineries by reducing wellhead pressure and increasing pressure at six existing integrated processing trains.
