      Intellectual assets: transforming industrial operations from the edge to the enterprise.

      Paving the way to autonomous operations

      In a rapidly changing industrial landscape, companies are facing challenges that would have seemed unimaginable just ten years ago. Market volatility, rising customer expectations, tightening regulations, and the need for sustainable development are changing the rules of the game. In this environment, a new category of assets is emerging: Intelligent Assets: systems that don't just operate, but think, adapt, optimize, and evolve.

      Smart assets are not just a technological evolution, but the foundation of industrial enterprises of the future. They combine traditional automation systems with the latest IoT platforms, advanced control algorithms, and Edge-to-Enterprise architecture, redefining efficiency in the 21st century.

      From Monitoring to Autonomy: The Evolution of Industrial Control

      For decades, industrial companies have used SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) and DCS (distributed control systems) to manage production processes. SCADA systems enabled remote monitoring of distributed infrastructure, such as pipelines and power grids, by centralizing data collection.

      In contrast, DCS systems outperformed other systems in local, continuous operations such as oil refining or chemical processing, providing a high degree of redundancy, process safety, and real-time control.

      However, as industrial processes expanded globally and became more complex, the limitations of these traditional systems became apparent. Centralized and event-driven SCADA architectures did not provide scalable, real-time predictive analytics. Their proprietary nature hindered integration with newer, more intelligent technologies and limited flexibility.

      The emergence of Internet of Things (IoT) platforms has changed this paradigm. The IoT connects a wide range of devices—both legacy and modern—via wired and wireless networks. Unlike traditional architectures, IoT platforms process data from both structured and unstructured sources, enabling real-time analytics and autonomous decision-making.

      By processing information locally on edge devices and integrating with powerful cloud systems, companies gain a unified yet decentralized environment where information flows freely, decisions are made faster, and optimization is continuous.

      Integrated edge management devices, which combine control logic with embedded recommendation algorithms, take this concept further. These systems can detect anomalies, predict problems, and provide operational recommendations in real time. By processing data at the source, they reduce latency, bandwidth, and power consumption, while improving security, response time, and ROI.

      Intelligence beyond connectivity: Advanced control and optimization

      Asset connectivity alone doesn't create intelligence. True value lies in the prediction, adaptability, and optimization made possible by advanced management, edge computing, and data-driven analytics.

      Edge device management devices with IEC-compliant communications and hybrid edge device management (EDM) enable remote or local deployment depending on cybersecurity and regulatory requirements. This flexibility ensures secure and scalable integration into operational technology (OT) environments.

      Methods such as Model Predictive Control enable predicting system states, effectively managing energy consumption and product quality in real time. Similarly, a fuzzy logic-based control system handles uncertainty and nonlinear behavior more effectively than binary systems, supporting more informed decision-making in complex scenarios.

      Data-driven optimization complements these management tools. Big data analytics transforms operational data (both historical and real-time) into a resource for gaining insights that traditional systems may miss. Digital twins allow operators to test and adjust changes in a virtual environment before implementing them. Meanwhile, machine learning continuously refines management strategies by adapting to operational changes and anomalies.

      Together, these technologies enable assets to not only execute commands, but also think, learn, and optimize, transforming field operators from real-time managers into strategic decision makers.

      Intelligence from the edge to the enterprise: unlocking potential

      Realizing the full potential of smart assets requires more than just new sensors or upgraded control systems. It requires a comprehensive digital ecosystem—a network architecture that spans the entire operational periphery and core of the enterprise.
